Flash Fiction Friday: What Fish Do For Fun

Woohoo! Here is this year’s First Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers’ challenge. Enjoy!

“It’s a decoy! I can feel it in my scales.” Marvin peered out from underneath the overhanging rock.

“That’s what Bobby thought. You know what happened to Bobby.” Alex stayed back in the rock’s shadow. His tail swished back and forth and sent ripples through the water.

“Stop that! He’ll see you.”

“Thought you said it was a decoy?”

“Yeah, well, no need taking chances. I’m not Bobby.”

“Mama’s gonna be mad. Told you it was a bad idea to skip school and come here.” Alex gave his tail a swish and slid forward. He stopped at the overhang’s edge. “He’s not moved at all! He has to be a decoy.”

“Told you!” Marvin shot forward and darted past the sentinel crane. It dove its beak at him.

Alex sped toward them. “Ahhh! Marvin!” He closed his eyes and rammed into the crane’s foot.

Marvin dodged the crane’s attack. “Alex! Swim!”

The crane reeled and squawked. Marvin and Alex swam.

“That was awesome!” Marvin laughed.

“Awesome? Yeah, sure. Can we just go  home now?”
