Flash Fiction Friday: The Thrill of the Hunt

Here’s this week’s entry for the Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writer’s challenge. Enjoy!

Barbara watched the fool-filled barge pass into the Gulf. How had Luke Padsmoore ever talked them into it? She still heard their roar, intoxicated by the thrill of the hunt of a monster.

A bell chimed behind her. Barbara turned. Lucy Padsmore bicycled toward her.

“He didn’t mean it!” Lucy skidded to a stop. “Please, Babsie, he didn’t mean it.”

Barbara pursed her lips. “I wish that were true, Lucy. But, there they go.”

“But, can’t you stop it? I mean, it listens to you, doesn’t it?”

“Sometimes, it listens. It didn’t two days ago, did it? And, if it’s attacked,” Barbara stared at Lucy. “Did you think I would make it attack your father for what he said?”

Lucy looked at the ground. “He called you devil’s whore and humiliated you in front of everyone…”

“He did, but I will not take revenge, dear. Not this way.”

“But, can you stop it from killing them?” Lucy grabbed her hand in both of hers.

Barbara sighed. “I will try dear. I will try.”
