Will Compassion Make a Difference, or Are We Too Far Gone?

I have to tell you something, I’m a pretty selfish person. Always have been.

I know what you’re thinking. You can see this coming from a mile away. I’m going to say that I was/am selfish, but that Jesus changed me.

You’re right. I am.

There’s still a lot to change, though. I’m still pretty selfish most days. But, he’s working on me.

I’m not going to tell you that everyone is selfish without Jesus’s help. I’ve known many selfless people in my life that didn’t believe in or follow Jesus. This isn’t anyone’s story but mine right now. I think it’s pretty applicable to everyone, but that’s for another time.

The thing is, when I look at the world I wonder if its worth it. Seems to me there is too much pain, too much sorrow, too much selfishness.

If it were up to me, I would have hit the reset button on the world and started over.

But, thankfully, it’s not up to me.

Do you know the story of Noah and the flood? That’s God’s way of telling us hitting the reset button doesn’t work. It’s that whole love he has for us. He gave us free will so we could love him back. Didn’t make us robots.

Often, we don’t choose him. He knows that. That’s why, instead of a reset button, he decided on a better way.

Chose compassion. Even when things looked bad.

Too much pain. Too much sorrow. Too much selfishness.

He still believed, he knew, compassion was worth it.

Every individual one of us – you, me – worth it.

And he asks us to believe it’s worth it, too.

The kids in the DRC, mothers in South Sudan, fathers in Syria, your neighbor down the street.

All of them. Worth it. Worth your time. Worth your consideration. Worth every effort.

Jesus didn’t give up, even in the bleakest of times.

What can you do? There are so many avenues you can choose to make a difference in this world. Compassion International is one. My side bar and the footer below can help you find out more.

But, do something.

Because, yes, Compassion makes all the difference in the world.

  1. Before I knew Christ I didn’t understand compassion because I was too caught up in collecting affirmations and accolades to shore up my insecurity. It was “here I am,” as opposed to “there you are.” Even if I did a good deed it was ultimately for myself. So, I hear you on the selfishness. Acting strictly out of a sense of love for another person was one of the many tectonic shifts that Jesus wrought in my heart.
