Flash Fiction Friday: The Unexpected Typical Day

Here’s my take on this week’s Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers prompt. Enjoy!

Sirens scream two blocks away. What now? Better not mess up my day.

I yawn and run my hand through my hair. Early morning interviews are killing me. What’s the point? They won’t hire me. Wonder what the excuse will be this time?

Is there no sun in this city? Looks like it’ll storm later. Figures. Can this week get any better?

I hear music. Someone’s playing in the square again? Sounds pretty good, maybe I should stop. I have a few minutes.

I turn the corner, and I see him. His eyes are closed and he strums his guitar. It pushes into my head and into my soul. It fills me up. I’ve known this before, this feeling. Long ago, but so familiar.

I close my eyes and life my face. Hope. That’s what it is. Hope.

I smile and head to my interview. It is a beautiful day.

I am right at 150 for this post, can you believe it? I don’t think I’ve been around there in a long time.

Sometimes, a good song is what we need. We can become so desensitized to the world around us, or always expect the worst. Even on the worst days, a song can reach inside of us and change everything. A good story does the same. For me it does.

What about you? What song pulls you out of the darkest days? What book?
