Compassion Wednesday: International Women’s Day

It’s International Women’s Day.

1 Day in the midst of 1 month where the majority of us actually agree on – or at least pay lip service to – equality.

I don’t think this quite cuts it. Equality is an everyday event. Every day. Every hour. Every minute. Women. Men. Black. White. Asian. Native American.

Every human being – all equally made in the image of God.

But, that’s all for another post. If you haven’t noticed, I talk about equality a lot on this blog. Because, I think we’re still missing the point.

But today, today is for women. I don’t want to take away from that.

Today, I want you to take time and thank the women in your life. Thank them for just being them. For their smiles, their laugh, their insight, their wisdom. Thank them for loving you. Thank them for the little things they do, for the big things they do, for everything they do.

It’s appropriate that today is also the 15th anniversary of the day I proposed and the most incredible woman I know said she would marry me.

Today is for her. It’s for my daughter. It’s for the hope that the world of the future is safer, better, for her than it is today.

Because that’s where true Compassion begins – when we finally realize what equality means. Not just for us, but for the future.

I also want you to go and take a look at some places that are making a difference in the lives of women – women all over the world, women oppressed or victimized, women who are being empowered to simply be allowed to be who they were created to be – wonderfully created.

  • Freegrance – creating entrepreneurial opportunities to lift women out of poverty and enslavement.
  • He for She – the UNs equality vehicle. Doing a lot of good. Could do more if we do our part, too.
  • International Justice Mission – Working to bring justice for all caught in the violence and oppression of poverty.

There are so many more.

Today is about equality. And so I ask you, what does that mean to you and what are you going to do about it?

What do you think? Does one day a year, or one month of focus, fulfill your quota for equality? Is it too much?

What about your views of feminism? Is it all about men hating? Do you think there’s too much whining? Could we do more for equality?

Tell me what you’re thinking. I’d love to hear from you.

  1. I think it’s a shame that so many people feel alienated by feminism. It is about equality. Not man bashing. Not female superiority. Equality. I have been a feminist all my life and it shocks me how just sharing this information can induce eye rolls and groans and occasionally outright threats. I pray that someday people will not assume that allowing others their rights as human beings will somehow diminish their own rights.
    Great post Russell!
